Questions About Reusing an Old iPad or Tablet With ExtraClock

What is ExtraClock?

ExtraClock is a browser-based word clock that gives an old iPad, tablet, smartphone or TV a new purpose. It is not an app that needs to be installed.
ExtraClock creates a personalized web link (URL) that you open in the browser of the device you want to use.
The link works like a bookmark.

Why is there no ExtraClock app?

ExtraClock is not an app that has to be installed.
Simply open the link on the device you want to use, click “Fullscreen”, or save it as an icon on the home screen (for example on an iPad).
That’s it – the word clock is displayed immediately.

What do I get when I place an order?

You will receive an order confirmation with your order number from the relevant sales platform.
With this order number, you can activate your personal ExtraClock link.

What does ExtraClock need?

An old or modern device with a web browser and an internet connection
The ability to use full-screen mode on the device

This can be tested, for example, in the Showroom.

Is it worth buying a used device?

A used device can be found from around €30.
ExtraClock itself costs around €10, so together with an inexpensive used device you can create an individual designer word clock for around €40.
Other word clocks often cost several hundred to several thousand euros.
So buying or bidding on a used device can definitely be worthwhile!

Is there a guarantee?

No – because there is no wear and tear. As long as the internet works, the word clock works too.

What if the link does not work?

Simply let us know which link is not working – we will take care of it.

What can the Designer do?

With the Designer, you can customize your word clock. You can choose as many languages
and/or dialects as you like. Up to 5 different backgrounds are possible. If your device is able to
play a video in the background, please select no more than one video. But first test it on your device
(older devices may not support this!).
Once languages, dialects and backgrounds (and, if applicable, a video) have been selected, you can test the word clock in the preview.
During the test, languages, dialects and backgrounds change every 5 seconds – later every 30 seconds.

Can I use custom background images?

Yes – although not every image is suitable. We are happy to test it and assess whether it works well.

When does a background video work?

Unfortunately, this depends on the age of the device. iPad 1, iPad 2 and older LG devices can only display
images as backgrounds. Older Kindle devices and the Nexus series, on the other hand, can load a
video as a background. Please test beforehand what is possible on your device.

Can I change the design later?

Yes – if you do not like the design you originally chose, it can be changed once free of charge.

Which time is actually displayed?

The time and date set on the device are displayed –
so not the server time.

How often does the word clock display change?

In test mode, the display changes every 5 seconds so that you can quickly get an impression of
the appearance and design of the word clock.
In live mode, the display (languages, dialects and backgrounds) changes every 30 seconds.

What is the delivery time for the link?

Your personal ExtraClock link is available immediately after a successful payment.

Device goes into standby!

The word clock includes a built-in function designed to prevent
the screen from dimming or the device from going into standby mode.
However, your device’s own power settings still take precedence.

Internet connection fails!

No problem. Since the word clock works through a web link,
you can open it again at any time as soon as the internet connection is available again.

Do I need a permanent internet connection?

No. An internet connection is only required each time the word clock is started or restarted.
After that, the word clock continues to run on its own without an internet connection.

Which browser should I use?

Google Chrome or Safari is usually already installed on the device.
There is normally no reason to use a different browser.

How much electricity does it use?

Smartphones and tablets use an average of 2–8 watts while charging.
TVs usually require considerably more.
Example calculation for continuous operation at 6 watts:
0.006 kW × 24 h × 365 days = 52.56 kWh/year
At €0.40/kWh, that comes to around €21 per year.

Can I continue to use my device normally?

Yes. ExtraClock is not installed; it simply runs in the web browser.
You can close the word clock at any time and continue using your tablet or computer normally.
ExtraClock does not change anything on your device.
